How to Apply to Microsoft (2026): Step-by-Step

Microsoft hires almost entirely for corporate and technical work: software engineering, product, research, sales, datacenter operations, and large intern and new-grad cohorts. There are no store or hourly lanes. The application lives on careers.microsoft.com, which moved to a new recruiting system in November 2025; applications from the old Global Careers Site did not carry over. Two things catch people. The site parses your resume into a profile and expects you to confirm every field, and it caps you at 50 active applications, so old ones have to be withdrawn from the Action Center before new ones go through.

Step by step: applying to Microsoft

1. Create a profile with a personal email address or your LinkedIn login. You can search without an account, but you must sign in to apply.
2. Upload a resume so the site can parse it, then check the extracted name, contact details, work history, education and certifications. Microsoft says confirming the parsed data is critical.
3. Search by keyword, location or job ID and read the required qualifications. A "strong match" label on a posting does not waive them; you still have to meet each one.
4. Click Apply, answer the required questions and attach your resume. The Job Cart lets you queue several openings and apply to them in one pass.
5. Watch for the confirmation email, then follow progress under Applications in the Action Center. Statuses shown to candidates read Submitted, Screen, Interview, Offer, Pre-Hire or Not selected.
6. Some roles start with a short screening conversation, and engineering roles may use an online technical screen. Interviews are usually 2 to 4 conversations of up to an hour each, by phone, Teams or in person.
7. Interview invitations appear on the Interviews tab of the Action Center, where you accept, decline or propose other times. Offer documents arrive through the Action Center, email or a secure link.

Tips from Microsoft applicants

• If an employee referred you, it shows under Referrals on the Action Center's Applications tab with the referrer's name. Microsoft says a referral never replaces submitting your own application.
• The first application offers a "Save my answers for future applications" checkbox. Tick it so the standard questions prefill next time.
• Microsoft says it usually cannot give individual feedback if you are not chosen for a screen. Join the Talent Network for alerts and reapply when a closer match posts.
• The candidate code of conduct allows AI for preparation but not during assessments or interviews unless explicitly permitted. Expect to work unaided in technical screens.

How long the Microsoft process takes

Microsoft does not publish a time-to-hear-back figure. Candidates typically describe a recruiter or online technical screen followed by a virtual loop of two to four interviews spread over several weeks, with the recruiter setting expectations for next steps after the loop.
