Welder cover letter example
Dear [Hiring Manager's name],
Seven years of structural and pipe welding, split between fabrication shops and industrial sites, is what I bring to the [role title] opening at [Company]. You run certified work under D1.1 and Section IX in the same shop, and that is the reason I picked your posting over the others. Few employers keep both sets of skills sharp.
My current shop builds skids and structural steel for refinery and water treatment customers. I carry active certifications for SMAW 6010/7018 on pipe in 6G, GTAW on stainless and carbon steel, and FCAW on plate in all positions. Over the last year I welded roughly 900 feet of 2-inch to 8-inch process pipe with a first-pass radiography rejection rate under 2 percent. I also fit my own work when the fitter is behind, and I have trained two apprentices on reading isometrics and weld symbols.
Your posting lists MIG, TIG, and stick, blueprint reading, and a TWIC card, with pipe experience preferred. I hold a current TWIC and have worked inside two port facilities. I read structural drawings and isometrics without help, check my own fit-up before striking an arc, and I know what a CWI is looking for because I have been the one handing over the job. I have an OSHA 10 card and a clean safety record.
I am ready to take a weld test whenever it suits your shop, and I can start on two weeks' notice.
Sincerely,
[Your name]

What hiring managers look for in a Welder cover letter
- Processes and positions, stated the way a weld test is written. 'SMAW 7018 on pipe in 6G' tells a shop foreman exactly what you can do; 'experienced in stick welding' does not.
- A quality figure. Radiography or UT rejection rate, or a clean record on a specific inspection, is the closest thing a welder has to a performance review.
- The codes you have tested to. AWS D1.1 for structural and ASME Section IX for pressure work are different certifications, and the letter should say which you hold and when they were last renewed.
- Whether you can fit and read drawings. Shops pay more for welders who can lay out and fit their own work from an isometric without waiting on someone else.
- Site access credentials such as TWIC and current OSHA cards, since a missing card can delay a start date by weeks.
Two other ways to open
- My last 900 feet of process pipe came back from radiography with a rejection rate under 2 percent, and I would like to bring that to [Company]'s shop.
- I hold current 6G certifications in SMAW and GTAW and a TWIC card, which covers everything in your posting except the start date.
Mistakes Welder candidates make
- Listing processes without positions or materials. 'MIG, TIG, and stick' is a starting point; foremen want plate versus pipe, positions, and thicknesses.
- Writing a long letter. Welding hiring managers read fast and test welds, so keep it to what you have certified, what you have built, and when you can test.
- Leaving out expired or pending certifications. If your D1.1 lapsed, say when you can retest rather than letting the foreman find out after the offer.
The 4-paragraph structure
- Hook — one line on why this specific Welder role and company interest you.
- Proof — 2–3 concrete results that match what the posting asks for (use real numbers).
- Fit — connect your GMAW, GTAW, SMAW to their needs.
- Close — a brief, confident call to action.
Weave in the skills that actually matter for this role (GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX) only where they're true for you.
